- DRP to hold inter-professional manifesto discussions.

- Thasmeen Ali says Maumoon 2008 manifesto provides more opportunities for youth.

- Dr. Shiham takes great pleasure in increased activity of youth in professional areas.

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and senior DRP member current Minister for Youth and Sports Dr. Aishath Shiham discussed DRP youth policy at the daily 1200hr press conference held at the Maumoon 2008 Media Office today.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign Deputy Media Manager Ali Waheed acted as a moderator at today’s conference.

Serial Events

Waheed informed the media of manifesto-related discussions to be held in Male and the atolls in order to obtain the views and opinions of the public in making DRP policy. He said that political opinion leaders will be active at these fora in addition to citizens working and trained in different fields.

He said the subject of the manifesto discussion for tonight will be specialized for sportspersons which will be followed by a discussion incorporating the views of cab drivers.

Opportunities

Thasmeen Ali said that the country has seen a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of opportunities for personal and professional development in the Maldives. He said that the Maldivian youth are now active in politics, professions and the arts.

He said that the DRP feels that much can be done to offer further opportunities for development to the country’s youth. He outlined the plans in the Maumoon 2008 manifesto for youth development, which includes offering 15000 job opportunities for the youth, 6000 scholarships from the DRP-proposed National University, a center for excellence in sports for islands with populations over 1000 and entrepreneurship loans for young businesspersons.

Challenges

Dr. Shiham spoke to the press about the challenges faced by the Government in terms of youth development. She said that while 35% of the Maldivian population come under the youth category, much needs to be done in order to ensure that they are provided with the necessary services and opportunities for advancement.

Gesturing towards the press seated in front of her, Dr. Shiham said that she takes great pride in the fact that youth are active in almost all professions.

Youth Vote

In response to a question regarding statistics on youth voting Dr. Shiham said that sadly no such survey has been carried out. She did not make anecdotal inferences on the subject.

Thasmeen Ali said that claims that the larger percentage of inmates in Maldivian prisons support the opposition is an over-simplification of a complex matter.

He explained that Maldivians in general feel that the Government is accountable for the actions of independent state institutions as well citing the fact that complaints had been lodged at the Government instead of the independent Elections Commission (EC) for voting irregularities. He said that this attitude has led to the general opinion among convicts that the Government is solely responsible for their incarceration and they bear grudges based on this misapprehension.

Following the separation of powers in the Maldives under the 2008 Constitution ratified in 8 August, the judiciary and legislative have been separated from the executive.
