MDP members initiate nationwide ID card confiscation operation - Waheed

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Spokesperson Mohamed “Mundhu” Shareef and Deputy Media Manager Ali Waheed spoke to the media at an unprecedented 1100hr press conference at the Media Office to discuss allegations of opposition ID card operations in the runup to the runoff round.

Waheed also invited all members and supporters of the party and Maumoon 2008 Campaign to attend a special event by the name of Wathan Edheney Maumoonah (the nation wants Maumoon) to be held at the Alimas Ufaa Carnival on the night of the 26th.

Operations

Waheed alleged that members of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) -led coalition are confiscating and hiding National Identity Cards of family members and friends in a nationwide movement to prevent supporters of DRP Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from voting.

Waheed condemned these acts and expressed alarm over reports that a male MDP coalition supporter in Naifaru Island, Faadhippolhu Atoll doused his wife in yellow paint following a domestic squabble over party affiliations. He said that he believes that rivalry should not reach the extent where relationships are threatened due to the elections.

Waheed also condemned acts of vandalism against DRP and members’ property in the atolls of Laamu, Haa Dhaal and Raa.

Student Loan

Shareef said at the conference that one of the largest sums mentioned as a loan in the Auditor General’s report of the Presidential Office was in fact a student loan which Gayoom granted to MDP Secretary General Hamid Abdul Gafoor.

He expressed his belief that based on these facts the President cannot be accused of granting monetary aid for political reasons as Gafoor is an opposition leader.

Letter suggests links between Christian evangelists and Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed

MALE, Maldives — Maumoon 2008 Campaign Spokesperson Mohamed “Mundhu” Shareef and Media Manager Ibrahim Athif Shakoor revealed a letter purportedly from David Hardingham to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Presidential candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed suggesting links between the latter and Christian evangelists at an unprecedented press conference held at 2000hrs at the Media Office tonight.

The sender’s address in the letter is Salisbury Cathedral, The Friends Office, 52 The Close, Salisbury, SP1 2EL. David Hardingham was the former head of a local NGO by the name of Friends of Maldives which formed a charity by the name of Maldives Aid following the 2004 tsunami. Hardingham was deported on suspicion of Christian evangelism and Maldives Aid was accused of importing pork as part of its aid package during tsunami recovery.

The gist of the letter which follows under what appears to be Salisbury Cathedral’s letterhead alleges an agreement between Nasheed and the church to establish a cathedral on the site of the Islamic Center after Nasheed incites the “Jamat ul-Moslemin” to blow the mosque up.

An England-based terrorist organization by the name of Jamaat ul-Muslimeen (The Muslim Community) headed by Jordanian, Abu Isa exists and another, predominantly Afro-Trinidadian, terrorist organization by the same name operates in Trinidad and Tobago and is under Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) survelliance.

The letter is not dated but the body suggests that it was sent a few days following Nasheed’s return to the Maldives after self-exile in the UK which was on 30 April 2005.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign rocks the vote

MALE, Maldives — The ROCK THE VOTE concert, organized by the Maumoon 2008 Campaign, was held last night in support of Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s candidacy in the runoff round of the 2008 Presidential elections.

Gayoom spoke at the show thanking all the performers and quipping about his regrets about not having musical talent. Gayoom received a standing ovation after expressing his deep love for music. The DRP candidate stayed to watch several musical numbers before leaving.

Maldivian music legends, Ahmed “Fulu” Nashid of Zero Degree Atoll fame, Abdu “Absy” Rasheed and Abdul Sameeu performed at the show. Nashid and Maldivian pop singer Sofoora performed covers of British and American rock and blues favorites such as Sweet Child of Mine and Sweet Home Chicago with famous Maldivian rock band Amazon Jade.

Up and coming bands 600-Million-Dollar Band and Three Limits also performed covers of American and Maldivian songs on the stage.

Last night’s show, which began at 2100hrs, was attended by close to 300 people in addition to senior members of the DRP and campaign officials.

DRP says misleading rumors about economy is just opposition scaremongering

MALE, Maldives - Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) senior members current Minister for Finance and Treasury Abdullah Jihad and the Ministry’s Minister of State Riluwan Shareef clarified rumors about the Maldivian economy at a press conference held at 1600hrs today.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign Media Manager Ibrahim Athif Shakoor acted as moderator and confirmed the authenticity of the video clip of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Presidential candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed calling for the legalization of cannabis.

Budget

Jihad said that the 2008 budget deficit is mostly due to MRf 2.4 billion which the state estimated as the total revenue from the Ihavandhippolhu and Gulhi lagoon reclamation ‘megaprojects’ and did not receive. He said that the steps taken by the government to minimize the effects of this loss have been very effective.

He said that rumors that government employees are being deprived of their salaries are completely false.

Jihad said that the total price of Treasury bills sold were decreased from MRf 8.4 billion to MRf 931 million this year. He also said that MRf 500 million is the current amount circulating in Maldivian banks therefore he does not see any reason why Maldivian banking should have liquidity issues.

He also said that the total amount in loans provided to the public by the Maldivian government in 2005 was MRf 6 billion and that the amount stands at MRf 17 billion. He said that the increase in amount of loans shows that government spending on citizen’s development has grown over time.

Borrowing

Jihad said that the MRf 80 million paid by Dhiraagu as year-end dividends to the state is a due payment and not state borrowing. He said that other state companies have also paid dividends to the state and some payments are still due.

He also denied Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Interim President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki’s accusation that the state borrowed USD 25 million from the State Bank of India (SBI).

Jihad said that the reason why the state reserve is down from MRf 306 million - 258 million is due to change in global oil prices which necessitated state lending to settle STO’s oil bills.

Foreign Lending

Shareef spoke about foreign financial aid to the Maldives. He said that the government has continued its work in raising funds from foreign institutions over the elections as well. He said that recent financial difficulties are a “temporary fiscal problem” and that they will be duly solved in time.

He said that the government has spoken with foreign banks in France and Luxembourg who are both willing to provide financial aid to the Maldives.

He also noted that a Holland bank has awarded USD 28 million in finances to the Maldives for a project the details of which he did not provide. He said that the tourism and export sectors of the Maldivian economy might be affected by the global financial crisis in the coming years but that otherwise the country faces no financial hardship.

He said that the Maldives has weathered the financial crises which hit due to the Gulf War and the ASEAN region financial crisis with little effect to the Maldivian economy.

Shareef also stated that international financial institutions such as the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have praised the management of the Maldivian economy and noted the need for better budget balancing and increase in state income.

3 petitions lodged against ex-MD of MIFCO - Dr. Fathin Hameed

Wednesday, 22 October 2008

00:41

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Council Member current Deputy Minister for Fisheries, Agriculture and Marine Resources Dr. Fathin Hameed and Maumoon 2008 Campaign Deputy Media Manager Ali Waheed spoke to the press at a special 1600hr press conference held at the Media Office yesterday.

Dr. Hameed commented on allegations of corruption which revolve around the recently replaced Managing Director (MD) of the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO), Adil Saleem. Waheed updated the media on recent and upcoming campaign activities.

Scandal

Dr. Hameed told the media that MIFCO’s previous MD, Saleem is accused of being involved in activities of corruption inside the company. She said that 3 petitions had been lodged against Saleem by MIFCO staff on 3 separate occasions.

She said that the first petition accuses Saleem of imposing dictatorial regulations which drastically curtailed seagoing staffs’ shore-leave durations. She said that the 2nd petition signed by more than 60 MIFCO staff accuses Saleem of selling, procuring and using company resources for his own benefit. The petition also accuses Saleem of committing acts of sexual misconduct at Kooddoo Fisheries Complex.

She said that a 3rd petition alleging imposing an inadequate wage system was lodged against Saleem as well.

She said that an investigation into the allegations made in the 2nd petition is ongoing although MIFCO’s internal investigation report shows that MIFCO management has not found proof of wrongdoing.

Events

Waheed, who had recently returned from touring the Atolls of Addu and Fuvahmulah, said that the DRP contingent’s trip was highly successful. He said that the DRP takes great pleasure in the fact that their Presidential candidate Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s message reached the two most densely populated atolls in the Maldives.

He noted the fact that the rally in Hitadu Island, Addu Atoll was broadcast on live television. He also said that citizens of the two southern atolls had good use of their access to informative campaign materials such as DRP-produced CDs.

He condemned opposition anti-campaign activities which he said had markedly increased in Gayoom’s absence.

Waheed said that Gayoom will speak with special needs individuals at a manifesto discussion meeting held from 2030-2200hrs last night. He also said that local opinion leader and popular musician Ahmed “Fulu” Nashid will perform at the DRP-organized ROCK THE VOTE concert which will be held at 2100hrs on 23 October 2008.

Contract

Waheed also denied the authenticity of the alleged contract of a political deal made between the DRP and the People’s Alliance (PA) which opposition leaders have recently revealed to the media. He said that the alleged document has not even been signed and is clearly a forgery.

He said that agreements were reached between the DRP and the PA on 22 September 2008 when formation of the DRP-PA coalition was announced but that the DRP does not believe in making deals to divide up executive power and compromise the party’s policies and principles.

No one can say voting for a particular person is Haram - Sheikh Nizar

MALE, Maldives — President of the Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Religious Wing, Sheikh Moosa Nizar and renowned Maldivian Islamic scholar, Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Didi spoke to the press at the 1200hr conference held at the Maumoon 2008 Campaign Media Office yesterday. Media Manager Ibrahim Athif Shakoor acted as moderator.

Sheikh Nizar and Dr. Abdullah Didi condemned Adalat Party (AP) President Sheikh Hussein Rasheed Ahmed’s claim that voting for DRP Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is Haram (legally forbidden by Islamic law) calling his statement baseless and ludicrous.

Athif Shakoor updated the press on campaign events while All Youth Linkage (AYL) sports club repesentative Azim Hussein clarified rumors regarding their connection with the DRP.

Updates

Athif Shakoor told members of the press that the DRP campaign contingent, including Gayoom, was in Fuvahmulah Island yesterday following the Hithadhoo Island rally on the night of 19th October where Presidential running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali had joined the DRP campaign contingent.

Clarification

Azim Hussein

Azim Hussein

AYL sports club representative Hussein clarified rumors of the club’s involvement at a Maumoon 2008 Campaign chapter house on Chandani Street. Hussein said that members of the AP had said at a recent rally that a man who goes by the name of “Hinmafushi” Hussein had told the AP’s Sheikh Ilyas Hussein that he is a member of the AYL and that he can testify that the club runs the DRP Chandani St. chapter house.

Hussein said that he was disappointed to find these rumors reported by the local press who he said had not contacted him for comment. He said that his and other AYL members’ contact numbers have been provided to members of the press.

Hussein confirmed to the press that no one by the name of ”Hinmafushi” Hussein is registered as a member of AYL. He also said that his club is not campaigning for the DRP although they had been at the Chandani St. chapter house on a few occasions.

Permissible

Sheikh Nizar and Dr. Abdullah Didi both condemned AP President Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed’s claim that voting for Gayoom is Haram. Dr. Abdullah Didi, an Islamic scholar who received his doctorate from Egypt’s Azhar University, said that Halal (legally permissbile under Islamic law) and Haram cannot be decided without supporting evidence from the Holy Quran or the Hadith (Prophet Mohamed’s actions and sayings).

Sheikh Nizar urged politicians and political activists to refrain from making careless statements about Islam for the sake of garnering political support.

Sheikh Nizar also condemned the AP’s Sheikh Ilyas Hussein’s comments on the Prophet’s person as misguided and highly disrespectful. He said that Sheikh Hussein had said at an AP rally that anyone can voice their religious opinions as the Prophet himself never had a diploma himself. Athif Shakoor condemned rumored calls for civil disobedience following the elections. He denied allegations of DRP involvement in these activities.

Athif Shakoor spoke to the press about violent confrontations between DRP and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) supporters which took place recently in Addu as well. He urged party members and well-wishers to stop personalizing political issues to the point of committing acts of violence.

He said that the first round of voting went relatively smoothly as voter support was spread among 6 different candidates but that now support is very polarized. He said that this polarization should not be allowed to become an obstacle to party members rights to listen to or promote their candidate’s message. He called for all party activists to allow each other the political space to make their decisions.

Southern Campaign

Athif Shakoor updated the press on DRP Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s ongoing campaign tour of Addu Atoll.

He said that Gayoom visited the islands of Maradhoo and Feydhoo yesterday. He said that a campaign rally was held in Feydhoo Island where in addition to Gayoom, senior DRP member current Minister for Legal Reform, Information and Arts Mohamed Nasheed addressed the island’s residents.

Athif Shakoor said that DRP Presidential running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali left for Hithadhoo Island in Addu where he will be addressing the residents with Gayoom at a rally to be held there tonight.

Ecology & Environment

Dr. Mausoom said that DRP environmental policy, outlined in the Maumoon 2008 manifesto, places the highest priority on providing means for the public to economize while protecting the environment at the same time. He said that the use of renewable energy instead of the diesel-fuelled generators currently in use will be introduced under a DRP government.

He also said that the DRP environmental policy includes plans to provide disposal systems for general and hazardous waste in the atolls. He also said that the DRP government plans to federalize administration of environmental policy at the atoll-level.

In response to questions from the media, Dr. Mausoom also spoke of plans to raise further awareness on environmentally harmful economic activities such as shark-fishing and harvesting turtle eggs. He said that the DRP policy is to raise environmental awareness among communities so that they are empowered to monitor and prevent environmentally damaging activities.

Your vote is not a choice between two personalities but rather a decision which will shape the future of the country - Gayoom

Thursday, 16 October 2008

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has met with professionals active in the field of sports and cab drivers at a meeting held at Dharubaaruge at 2030hrs last night to discuss DRP policy and manifesto-related issues.

Gayoom said at the meeting that casting one’s vote at the Presidential elections is not just making a choice between the personalities of two contesting candidates but rather that it is a decision one makes which will shape the future of the country.

He also condemned what he called the previous attempts to create disturbance and disorder on the streets of Maldives in the name of bringing democracy to the country. He said that he believed that such acts would hinder the development of the country.

Unrest

Gayoom first addressed the 200 sportspersons and persons active in the field regarding what he said were the debilitating effects of civil war in Sri Lanka. He said that Sri Lanka as a country had been travelling at a fast pace on a steady course of development as it was rich in natural and human resources.

He said that after Sri Lanka had descended into civil war following the rebellion of Tamil insurgents against the country’s Government, progress and development had been forced to slow down to a halt there.

Gayoom said that casting the right vote in the coming runoff round of the Presidential elections is crucial in preventing civil unrest in the Maldives as well.

Sports

Gayoom said at the meeting that Maldivian sportspersons have won awards and made significant achievements at both regional and international levels.

He said that the fact that the Maldivian national soccer team was able to beat last year’s champion India at the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship shocked and awed the world.

He said that Government policy has been critical in helping Maldivian sportsmen reach the heights that they have.

Gayoom outlined some of the key points of sports policy in the Maumoon 2008 manifesto, including the establishment of a center for excellence in sports, additional sports stadiums and other facilities. He also said that the DRP Government promises to focus on watersports in addition to soccer and futsal.

In addition to Gayoom, the event was attended by DRP Presidential running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, Minister for Youth and Sports Dr. Aishath Shiham, other cabinet ministers and senior DRP members.

- DRP to hold inter-professional manifesto discussions.

- Thasmeen Ali says Maumoon 2008 manifesto provides more opportunities for youth.

- Dr. Shiham takes great pleasure in increased activity of youth in professional areas.

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential running mate Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and senior DRP member current Minister for Youth and Sports Dr. Aishath Shiham discussed DRP youth policy at the daily 1200hr press conference held at the Maumoon 2008 Media Office today.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign Deputy Media Manager Ali Waheed acted as a moderator at today’s conference.

Serial Events

Waheed informed the media of manifesto-related discussions to be held in Male and the atolls in order to obtain the views and opinions of the public in making DRP policy. He said that political opinion leaders will be active at these fora in addition to citizens working and trained in different fields.

He said the subject of the manifesto discussion for tonight will be specialized for sportspersons which will be followed by a discussion incorporating the views of cab drivers.

Opportunities

Thasmeen Ali said that the country has seen a dramatic increase in the quantity and quality of opportunities for personal and professional development in the Maldives. He said that the Maldivian youth are now active in politics, professions and the arts.

He said that the DRP feels that much can be done to offer further opportunities for development to the country’s youth. He outlined the plans in the Maumoon 2008 manifesto for youth development, which includes offering 15000 job opportunities for the youth, 6000 scholarships from the DRP-proposed National University, a center for excellence in sports for islands with populations over 1000 and entrepreneurship loans for young businesspersons.

Challenges

Dr. Shiham spoke to the press about the challenges faced by the Government in terms of youth development. She said that while 35% of the Maldivian population come under the youth category, much needs to be done in order to ensure that they are provided with the necessary services and opportunities for advancement.

Gesturing towards the press seated in front of her, Dr. Shiham said that she takes great pride in the fact that youth are active in almost all professions.

Youth Vote

In response to a question regarding statistics on youth voting Dr. Shiham said that sadly no such survey has been carried out. She did not make anecdotal inferences on the subject.

Thasmeen Ali said that claims that the larger percentage of inmates in Maldivian prisons support the opposition is an over-simplification of a complex matter.

He explained that Maldivians in general feel that the Government is accountable for the actions of independent state institutions as well citing the fact that complaints had been lodged at the Government instead of the independent Elections Commission (EC) for voting irregularities. He said that this attitude has led to the general opinion among convicts that the Government is solely responsible for their incarceration and they bear grudges based on this misapprehension.

Following the separation of powers in the Maldives under the 2008 Constitution ratified in 8 August, the judiciary and legislative have been separated from the executive.

Commonwealth observer team and US state department say Maldivian Presidential elections competitive, transparent and inclusive - Thasmeen Ali

DRP Running mate (middle) and the senior members

Sunday, 12 October 2008

- International observers say outcome of Maldives Presidential election not affected.

- DRP Presidential running mate praised work of the Elections Commission.

- Kamaluddin applauds staff of DNR and the Maldives Police Service.

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential running mate Minister for Atolls Administration Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and DRP senior members Aneesa Ahmed, Azima Shakoor, Hamdhoon Hameed and Abdullah Kamaluddin spoke to the media at a press conference held at DhiTV studios at 2330hrs last night.

Thasmeen Ali welcomed the Commonwealth observer team’s findings and the statement issued by the U.S. State Departmenton the 2008 Maldivian Presidential elections. He congratulated and expressed support for the Election’s Commission’s (EC) tireless work.

Abdullah Kamaluddin also praised the staff of the Department of National Registration (DNR) for their efforts to ensure the voting rights of the Maldivian people.

International Opinion

Thasmeen Ali welcomed the statements issued by the Commonwealth observers team to the Maldives and the US state department regarding the first round of voting in the 2008 Maldivian Presidential Elections. He said that he would like to second the observer team in saying that for a country which is completely new to the concept of multiparty democracy the elections were relatively well administered.

The Common wealth observer team’s interim statement says that “despite being the country’s first multi-party election, it was inclusive and competitive, as all major political forces fielded a canddidate, alongside one independent”. With reference to voting irregularities which they found the team also said that “the overall number of persons affected remained a minority”. The US State Department also concurred that “the few voting irregularities could not have affected the final outcome”.

According to the website of the EC, the final outcome places DRP candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom at the top with 40% of the votes and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed following second with 25%.

Free & Fair

Thasmeen Ali said that he feels that the EC handled reported voting irregularities in a transparent and inclusive manner as well. He applauded the creation of an independent Complaints Bureau and the inclusion of representatives from all political parties in a meeting to decide whether to continue the first round of voting following reports of problems.

Thasmeen Ali applauded the decision of all parties to urge the EC to solve those problems and continue to allow the people to exercise their right to vote. He also noted the MDP Presidential candidate’s representatives’ efforts to ensure the people that “nothing had gone wrong” in the first round of elections.

Thasmeen Ali said that he feels the attempt by the coalition between the MDP and Jumhooree Party alliances which is officially endorsed by independent Presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed has acted irresponsibly in attempting to discredit a process which took pains to involve those parties at key stages of the first voting round.

Voting Rights

Kamaluddin who is the current Minister for Home Affairs in addition to being a senior member of the DRP applauded the efforts of the staff of the DNR which worked non-stop over 48 hours to ensure that as many National Identity Cards as possible were completed in time for the elections. He said that applications for NIDs were submitted even a day before the election.

He also noted the assistance provided by the Maldives Police Services (MPS) who acted under their mandate to follow the call to national service in order to ensure the provision of the people’s voting rights which are enshrined in the 2008 Constitution of the Maldives.

The public is more energized in the run-up to the run-off round - Athif Shakoor

- DRP gears up for second round of campaigning in Male and the atolls.

- Gayoom ready to join Nasheed for debate.

- DRP will not announce formation of coalitions before agreements are finalized.

MALE, Maldives — Maumoon 2008 Campaign Media Manager Ibrahim Athif Shakoor provided the press with campaign updates for the run-off round of the elections. He also commented on rumors of coalitions between the Dhivehi Raiyyitunge Party (DRP) and other Maldivian political parties at a press conference held at the Media Office at 1230hrs.

Campaign trail

Athif Shakoor said that DRP Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom will be touring the atolls and making campaign visits to specific locations in Male in the coming weeks.

He said that the 1230 press conference which will be a serial event throughout the working week from now onwards will provide updates from the campaign trail.

Debate

Athif Shakoor said in response to a question from the press that there is no reason why Gayoom would not agree to attend a debate with his Presidential contender Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed.

Athif Shakoor said that the reason why the Maumoon 2008 Campaign was reticent to do so before was because the earlier format allowed for other candidates to jointly attack Gayoom and that this campaign believes such a format defeats the purpose of a fair debate.

Joint Action

Commenting on the rumored formation of coalitions between the DRP and other political parties Athif Shakoor said that his party is in talks with other parties and that he would not say that a specific party has joined the DRP before the fact.

He said that claiming the support of a party before an agreement is finalized does not fit into DRP policy.

Elections

Athif Shakoor said that the public as a whole is more “energized” following the first round of elections in light of the observations he made at the DRP’s victory celebration at Imaduddin on the 9th of this month.

He said that in contrast to the first round, the public now faces a stark choice between two candidates and it is up to the people to choose the one who will usher in further developments to the country. He said that the people should also give importance to choosing a candidate who will work towards acclimatizing the country to democratic principles and integrating reform legislation into society and culture.

He said that the country is still new to recently established legal and institutional reforms citing the example that certain parties mistakenly associated the independent Election’s Commission (EC) with the Government following complaints of voting irregularities.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign Holds Pick-Up Truck Parade in Male

MALE, Maldives — The Maumoon 2008 Campaign has held a pick-up truck parade to celebrate Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s achievements in the first round of elections today.

The parade began at 1600hrs from a point near the Tsunami Monument in the Henveiru ward of Male and made a circuit through the main streets of Male. The parade passed through Majeedhee Street, Chaandhanee Street, Orchid Street and Bodu Thakurufaanu Street.

DRP to take Head of MDP Parliamentary Group Hassan Afeef to court

Male, Maldives — Legal Consultant to the Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Mohamed Fizan said at a 1200 press conference held at the Maumoon 2008 Media Office today that the DRP will file a defamation suit against the Head of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group Hassan Afeef at the Male civil court today.

Fizan also announced tonight’s ceremony held at the Hiyfaseyha Maizan (aka Artificial Beach) held to inaugurate the beginning of Gayooms 5 dynamic years at 2100hrs tonight. He said that the show will include live performances by local bands as well as other colorful events.

Lies

Fizan said that the defamation suit is being filed in connection with comments Afeef had made at an MDP meeting on 19 Septemer 2008 accusing Gayoom of embezzling USD 80 million in tsunami funds and also of depositing USD 40 million in tsunami aid from the Emir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani into Gayoom’s personal account.

Fizan said Afeef’s claims are without proof or basis and that he had slandered Gayoom in a public forum.

In response to a question from the media, Fizan said that action will be filed against MDP acting President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki for the same reason. He did not say when the suit against Zaki will be filed.

Justice

Fizan said that now that the judiciary is independent following separation of powers with the ratification of the 2008 Constitution, there is nothing to prevent the DRP from obtaining justice for the party and its members.

Until 7 August 2008 when President Gayoom ratified the new Constitution, the Maldivian judiciary was administered by the Ministry for Justice.

Ali Waheed assaulted by opposition alliance

Waheed at today's Press Conference

- Opposition supporters attack Waheed in Maavah Island.

- Dubious text messages received in connection with 95.2 DhiFM’s poll.

- Evangelists trying to take advantage of Maldivian hospitality and openness.

MALE, Maldives — Maumoon 2008 Campaign Deputy Media Manager Ali Waheed spoke to the press at the serial 1200 press conference held on weekdays at the Maumoon 2008 Media Office today.

He provided the press with details of the physical attack on his person which took place in Laamu Atoll, Maavah Island yesterday.

He said that local private radio broadcaster 95.2 DhiFM should make an official apology to the DRP, other political parties and the Maldivian public for the effects of their discredited popularity polls.

Impeded

Waheed said that opposition supporters had organized the protest and attack against DRP campaign officials in Laamu Atoll, Maavah Island yesterday.

Waheed said certain individuals had strung up opposition banners and shouted abuse while carrying plywood placards at DRP officials and supporters who had neared Maavah Island’s jetty in a party vessel.

Waheed said in addition to him, party officials Ahmed Nihan and Alhan Fahmy were the only campaign officials who had managed to get off board when Waheed was assaulted and struck on the back of the head by opposition supporters.

Kaleidoscope

Waheed said that his assailants were wearing yellow MDP t-shirts and red Jumhooree Party (JP) caps, and carrying white placards with messages of support for independent Presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed.

He said that the assailant’s apparel and placards indicated that the opposition parties have begun to respond to mounting support for DRP Presidential candidate incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom following the recent Supreme Court (SC) rulings.

The SC had ruled in favor of upholding the Election Commission’s (EC) decision to approve Gayoom’s bid for the candidacy in two separate cases on 2 October 2008.

Waheed said that Dr. Saeed who must have seen the adverse effects of having a factionalized society should not condone creating an antagonistic society separated by party lines.

Fever Pitch

Waheed said that he believes it inevitable for events to come to disorder and unrest in the same way that bubbles inevitably raise to the surface of heated water once boiling point is reached.
He said that however all parties should attempt to maintain peace and stability throughout the nation and he urged all parties to stop encouraging violence.

He said that he does not believe that the fact that he or other DRP supporters did not react to the opposition attack is a sign of cowardice. He called Dr. Saeed and the leadership of the MDP and JP cowards for not confronting him themselves.

Confusion

Waheed also commented on the recent Dhiraagu pvt. Ltd. press release regarding complaints about DhiFM’s elections polls conducted via SMS.

Dhiraagu had noted in their press release that “thank you” text messages received by persons who did not vote before the actual voting had begun came from an Australian number outside the Dhiraagu communications network.

Waheed demanded that DhiFM should apologize for the mental distress caused to members of political parties and the public by the careless manner in which their polls were conducted. In response to a question from the media he said that the perception created by the results of dubious polls would have lasting effects on the public psyche.

He said that he does not endorse a boycott of DhiFM itself but that he advises them to conduct future polls in a more transparent and responsible manner.

Interlopers

Waheed also condemned the MDP’s endorsement of attempts to introduce foreign values to the social, cultural and religious environment of the Maldives with reference to recent reports that the MDP’s campaign manager is an Australian national by the name of James McGrath.

According to an article printed on the BBC News UK website, 34-year-old James McGrath is an Australian national who has worked for the British Conservative Party for 7 years. He was appointed director of political strategy at City Hall under Johnson’s mayorship. McGrath resigned following allegations of racism in connection with remarks that he had made to reporter Marc Wadsworth of the-latest.com website. McGrath had responded to a question regarding British-Caribbeans threatening to leave the country en masse if a right-wing Conservative such as Johnson is elected mayor by saying “well let them (Caribbeans) go if they don’t like it here (Britain)”.

Waheed said that the Maldivian public is aware of “cunning individuals” who have tried to manipulate the internal affairs of the Maldives for their own private gain.

He condemned in strong words the attempts by evangelists masquerading as champions of social causes in order to take advantage of the Maldivian people’s unique hospitality and openness.

Emails suggest that James McGrath and the MDP linked to religious freedom movement

Hussein Shareef at today's Press Conference

MALE, Maldives — The Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) official Spokesperson Mohamed Hussein Shareef and the DRP Registrar and former Controller of Immigrations Ibrahim Shafiu spoke about the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) “Other Maldives” campaign’s alleged campaign manager James McGrath at the serial 1200 press conference held on weekdays at the Maumoon 2008 Campaign Media Office today.

Hussein Shareef revealed email correspondence to the press which suggests that James McGrath has links to a movement to change the Maldives into a multi-religious society.

Shafiu provided details of the legal basis on which the DRP has lodged complaints against McGrath.

Email

Hussein Shareef revealed to the press that a senior DRP official had recently received, from an anonymous source, a forwarded email message which suggests that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and McGrath have links to a movement to introduce religious freedom to the Maldives.
The email message was sent on 3 August 2008 at 1352hrs with the subject heading “McGrath’s trips” from an email address titled “MDP Riyaasee (Presidential ) Campaign” to various recipients whom Hussein Shareef says are senior MDP officials. The body of the message is as follows;

Dear All

Attached is James McGrath’s program for the rest of his visit.

GOTV Managers - pls arrange trips with Thuthube. Budget needs to be approved from Mausoom as per the template he has developed for North and South trainings. GOTV Managers - also pls make arrangements for conducting the trainings. The Campaign Aide assigned to your atolls will assist you with the 40 million but I hope the 1 year period is enough to make this country what we want it to be a multi religious place . HA - R (Sama), B - ADh (Shifana), V - Th (Nathu), L - S (Ifa).

The correspondence is signed “Thanks, Shehe”. Hussein Shareef suggested that “Shehe” might be former MDP Shadow Education Minister Shehenaz Abdullah.

Religious Mission

Hussein Shareef expressed his deepest concerns about foreign intervention in the political affairs of a sovereign state. He said that the Islamic religion is one of the cornerstones of Maldivian society and that the Maldivian people would not wish to lose the country’s religious unity.

Hussein Shareef said that if the email is a forgery the MDP should react to it as soon as possible. He said that the DRP has received information that the email has been forwarded to several others and printed copies of it have been disseminated on the streets of Male.

Hussein Shareef said that the sum of 40 million regardless of what currency it is in, is a large sum and whether such a sum has been circulating in connection with MDP visits to the atolls should be investigated.

He concluded that as concerned citizens, the DRP will bring the email to the attention of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Regulations

Shafiu spoke to the media on McGrath’s alleged violation of visa regulations.

He said that MDP acting President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki has agreed that McGrath has been providing assistance to the MDP’s “Other Maldives” campaign. He said that regulation number 1/2007 issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) prohibits those in the Maldives on a tourist visa from working whether voluntarily or on a wage basis. He said that McGrath who is currently in the Maldives on a tourist visa has broken the law.

He urged the MDP to respect Maldivian law.

He said that the MDP has exhibited a systematic disregard for the rules and regulations of the Maldivian legal system. He said that the MDP had previously invited an organization by the name of Global Protection Committee (GPC) headed by Michael Lord-Castle who had made comments which some accused of being militant to local English daily to the effect that the GPC encourages “tracking” the President down and” bringing him to justice”.

“The MDP cannot be allowed to involve foreign interests in Maldivian internal affairs” - DRP Spokesperson

Hamza Latheef (Media Office)

MALE, Maldives — Official Spokesperson of the Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Mohamed Hussein Shareef spoke to the media on the serial Maumoon 2008 press conference televised live on DhiTV at 2300hrs.

He revealed that his cell phone number had been used by inexplicable means to vote for tonight’s DhiFM opinion poll without his consent.

He thanked Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) acting President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki for confirming the DRP’s allegations against James McGrath and warned the public of the ramifications of foreign intervention in the internal political affairs of the Maldives.

SMS

Hussein Shareef read out a text message that he said he received at 2257hrs tonight from +600 to the media tonight. According to him, the text message read “thank you for your vote”. He said that he is aware of an opinion poll being conducted in connection with the upcoming elections on private radio broadcaster 95.2 DhiFM from 2300-0000hrs tonight.

Hussein Shareef said that he had last texted from his number at 2248hrs tonight and that he was surprised to receive an SMS in what he believes is connection with tonight’s DhiFM poll before the appointed time for SMS voting.

He expressed concern on his and DRP members’ behalf about the validity of polls when suspicious activities are carried out in connection with them. He also expressed his disappointment in not being able to cast his vote in tonight’s poll.

Regulations

Hussein Shareef thanked MDP acting President Zaki for confirming all of the allegations he had made against the MDP in connection with James McGrath in an MDP press conference tonight.

He said that Zaki had agreed that McGrath has been aiding the MDP and that the Australian had done so on a voluntary basis. Hussein Shareef countered that whether McGrath is paid or not is not the issue. He said that a tourist visa does not allow for foreign nationals to work in the Maldives either voluntarily or on a wage basis.

He said that the DRP has alerted concerned officials of McGrath’s violation and that it is his wish that the former British Conservative Party campaign aide be deported as soon as possible.

He responded to Zaki’s allegations that the DRP directly controls a local print daily by the name of Hamaroalhi which employs a foreign national. He said that the foreign national in question has a Maldivian work visa in her possession and that she is employed on a professional basis.

Poorna Rodrigo, the aforementioned foreigner, is a Sri Lankan national who writes for the English section of Hamaroalhi daily.

Make-over

Hussein Shareef said that McGrath is not only working for the MDP but that he also controls the MDP’s “Other Maldives” Campaign. He said that email correspondence which the DRP had made public in an earlier press conference indicates that McGrath dictates what the MDP Presidential candidate wears and does. He also said that McGrath has expressed dissatisfaction with MDP officials for taking rest during the morning hours of Ramadan.

He warned the people that the MDP Presidential candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed’s public image was created by McGrath and that it does not reflect Nasheed’s true character. He called this change a “face-lift” that Nasheed had required in order to garner votes in a public referendum.

He said that an unnamed MDP official had personally commented to him in the past that the MDP has never tried to become a political party and that the party’s status as a populist revolutionary movement appeals and adds to its core membership.

Hussein Shareef said that images such as the temple flower (common name for Plumiera Rubra aka Frangipani) and ideals such as “other Maldives” has served to transform the MDP leadership from what he said were dubious individuals who possessed “eyes that burned like coals” into publicly appealing statespersons.

He said that the point he is trying to make is that the change that the MDP has experienced has come about due to outside intervention and that he is concerned on one hand about continued foreign influence if the MDP is elected and the MDP reverting to its original militancy on the other.

He said that the basic principle behind the DRP’s cause is to uphold Maldivian independence with regards to the country’s sovereignty, religion and nationality.

Links

In response to a question from the media, Hussein Shareef confirmed that the DRP has links to the Chinese Communist Party and the Indian National Congress (INC).

He said that the DRP has never sought or received technical aid from either of the parties.

He said that a DRP contingent met with representatives from the INC to obtain their counsel on the creation of party branches and executive posts.

Maumoon 2008 Campaign

He said isaid that they were employees of an Indian company which the DRP had hired on a contractual basis to do stage work and lighting for the campaign launch event.

He said the DRP does not condemn hiring overseas professionals in general making the comment that the Jumhooree Party (JP) has also employed an unnamed Germany company for similar purposes.

He made the statement that involving foreign interests in Maldivian politics is what the DRP cannot condone in the interests of the state and the people.

Afternoon Press Conference at the Media Office

Mohamed Hussein Shareef

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) official Spokesperson and member of the DRP Youth Wing Mohamed “Mundhu” Hussein Shareef spoke at the Maumoon 2008 Campaign’s serial 1630 Press Conference at the which is televised live on DhiTV and streamed live on maumoon2008.net.

Hussein Shareef revealed that the Maumoon 2008 Campaign has lodged complaints regarding alleged Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Presidential Campaign Manager James McGrath at the Maldives Police Services (MPS), Elections Commission (EC) and the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE).

He commented on opposition protests against the Maumoon 2008 Campaign tour which, according to him, have increased in recent days. He warned that the Maumoon 2008 Campaign will report protests held illegally.

He clarified the Campaign’s stand on MDP allegations of embezzlement against President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who is also the DRP’s Presidential candidate for the 2008 elections.

Illegal Alien

Hussein Shareef said at the press conference that the DRP has lodged complaints at the MPS, EC and DIE against Australian national James McGrath who is currently in the Maldives on a tourist visa.

Hussein Shareef had said at an earlier press conference that McGrath has been working as manager of the MDP’s “Other Maldives” campaign in violation of visa regulations. He had also accused the former employee of the British Conservative Party of interfering in Maldives’ internal affairs in violation of international conventions.

According to an article printed on the BBC News UK website in June 2008, 34-year-old James McGrath is an Australian national who has worked for the British Conservative Party for 7 years.

“Fireball Democracy”

Hussein Shareef condemned the protests against the Maumoon 2008 Campaign tour which he said have increased in frequency and magnitude in the past two days.

Hussein Shareef revealed that Deputy Media Coordinator of the Maumoon 2008 Campaign Ali Waheed was physically attacked at Maavah island in Laamu Atoll today. He said that DRP supporters at the scene had to restrain the attackers to prevent Waheed from suffering further harm. He also noted that the attackers were dressed in yellow.

He said that DRP supporters and senior officials have been confronted by rabbles dressed mostly in red and yellow. He said that confrontations have taken place in addition to yesterday’s “vulgar” protest in Kudahuvadhoo island of Dhaalu atoll, in Gan island in Laamu atoll, Guraidhoo island in Male atoll, Hulhumale island in Male atoll and Thulhaadhoo island in Baa atoll.

He said that all protests were organized by three main parties which he said were the Jumhooree Party (JP), the MDP and independent Presidential candidate Dr. Hassan Saeed’s supporters.

He condemned these acts as against the spirit of democratic elections and specifically urged members of the MDP not to return to earlier tactics of creating disorder on the streets. He said that the DRP does not wish for the reform process to be reversed and for a peaceful Islamic democracy instead of the “fireball democracy” that the opposition is attempting to create.

He also said that in addition to being free and fair, democratic elections should also be peaceful in order for them to proceed smoothly.

Vandalism

Hussein Shareef also said that the last two days has also seen an increase in political vandalism.

He said that Maumoon 2008 banners and posters have begun to be slashed with razor blades and physically torn following the recent Supreme Court (SC) rulings which has cleared the path for Gayoom to proceed unhindered towards the ballot box. He said opposition parties should not take out their frustrations over lack of support on the winner and that all parties should try to canvass support within legal means.

Hussein Shareef warned legal action against the perpetrators and said that complaints will be lodged at the EC as well as the MPS.

Congratulations

Hussein Shareef said that Gayoom himself has always advised campaign activists to act in a positive and proactive manner instead of harboring vendettas personal or otherwise.

He also said that Gayoom has set an example for other Presidential candidates by congratulating MDP candidate Nasheed on the SC decision to allow him to contest the elections.

Foreign Affairs

In response to a request for comment on MDP acting President Ibrahim Hussein Zaki’s allegation that Gayoom had personally accepted a USD 40 million donation by the Emir of Qatar His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani into Gayoom’s account Hussein Shareef said that Zaki as a former SAARC Secretary General appointed by Gayoom is well aware of the procedure for accepting foreign aid and therefore should not make the accusations which Hussein Shareef said are baseless and unsupported.

He noted that Zaki had made similar accusations during an earlier campaign against Gayoom saying that he has proof that Gayoom has embezzled money deposited in an overseas account. Hussein Shareef said that Zaki could not prove his point and that he can state for the record that Gayoom does not have a bank account overseas.

Hussein Shareef noted that the Maldives is the first country to establish a separate account for tsunami funds which is independently audited. He also said that the use of tsunami funds is overseen by a special body which includes the United Nations resident coordinator in the Maldives.

He said that the US government has praised the Maldives for its transparent and efficient system of dispensing tsunami funds.

MDP Campaign Manager James McGrath in violation of visa regulations - Hussein Shareef

MALE, Maldives — Dhivehi Raiyyithunge Party (DRP) Council Member and Attorney General Azima Shakoor and official DRP Spokesperson and Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed “Mundhu” Hussein Shareef spoke to the media at the Maumoon 2008 Media Office at 2300hrs tonight.

Shakoor gave highlights of today’s Supreme Court (SC) rulings and Hussein Shareef spoke about the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) foreign Campaign Manager’s violation of visa regulations.

James McGrath

Hussein Shareef said that the Maumoon 2008 Campaign has received information in the form of email correspondence that indicate that the MDP’s campaign manager is a white British national by the name of James McGrath.

Hussein Shareef said that McGrath is a member of the British Conservative Party who had played a pivotal role in current Conservative London mayor Boris Johnson’s mayoral campaign until he was forced to resign due to racist remarks he had made against the black population of London.

Hussein Shareef also said that McGrath is spending time in the Maldives on a tourist visa and that he has violated visa regulations by actively taking part in Maldivian political activities. He said that he will bring McGrath’s violation to the attention of the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE). He also said that he would complain to the British government for McGrath’s involvement in the internal affairs of a sovereign country.

Hussein Shareef expressed concerns over the fact that McGrath with his reported attitude towards people of races other than his is not only involved in but controlling the MDP’s Presidential campaign as he feels that email correspondence between MDP leaders and McGrath indicate

Precedents

Shakoor said that today the SC has set two important precedents for the future of Maldivian justice today.

She said that she applauds the SC’s decision to declare that no law can apply retrospectively to actions taken place prior to the establishment of the law. She said that this maxim is followed in democratic countries worldwide and that the SC’s decision is both academic and just.

She said that the existing maxim for civil in the Maldives is that courts rule in favor of the party that presents a weightier probability. She said that the criminal court demands that the prosecution proves the defendants guilt beyond reasonable doubt and that now the SC has set the precedent that they demand the prosecution to prove guilt beyond all doubt.
Theft

In response to a request for comment on whether the SC’s ruling in favor of the EC’s decision to approve Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Presidential candidate Mohamed “Anni” Nasheed’s bid for the presidency confirms Nasheed’s innocence, Shakoor stated that the SC had made no comment on whether the Nasheed had or had not committed a crime.

She explained that the Court had said that there are two categories of theft under Shari’a Law one classified as thauzeeree and the other as deserving of a hadd. She said that the latter crime which if committed by a Presidential hopeful would disqualify their bid for the candidacy as per Article 109(g) of the 2008 Constitution, requires, in the event of no confession from the defendant, the testimony of two valid witnesses under Shari’a Law. As the criminal courts have decided that in Nasheed’s case the crime is classified as thauzeeree theft, Moosa Anwar’s case has no legal standing.

Convicts’ Vote

She also said that the high court has declared that Article 5(b) of the General Electoral Rules Act 2008 is in violation of the political rights set out in Article 16(a) of the 2008 Constitution. The case had been filed by both the Jumhooree Party (JP) and the AP, and that the JP’s case was heard as the ruling would decide the court’s stand on the issue.

Shakoor said that this effectively removes the restriction on convicts serving sentences in excess of 5 years from voting in elections.

She welcomed this change and said that the judiciary in general has set precedents today that deserve praise for their justice.

Deadlines

Shakoor also said that the high court has also decided that Article 22 of the Presidential Electoral Rules Act 2008 is not in violation of the 2008 Constitution in the case of Social Liberal Party (SLP) vs Article 22 of the Presidential Rules Act 2008.

Shakoor said that the court had said that the transitional chapter of the Constitution sets the deadlines for the 2008 Presidential elections for 10 October 2008 and that Article 22 of the Presidential Electoral Rules Act upholds this constitutional deadline.

The JP, Maldives National Congress (MNC) and AP had also filed suit to the same effect.

Shakoor said that the Maumoon 2008 Campaign welcomes the high court decisions as well as it is the campaign’s wish to have the elections held on the deadline that the Constitutional Assembly which represented the people of the Maldives had set out in the 2008 Constitution.
